Opara Onyekachi Courage
Opara Onyekachi Courage (b. 1984) is a contemporary Nigerian Artist who lives and works in Owerri, Imo state. He attended Federal science and Technical College Jalingo in Taraba State, acquiring the National Technical Certificate (NTC) in Decorative painting. He holds a B.A in Fine Arts and Design, University of Portharcourt, Rivers State and graduated as the best Painting student in 2011 with a 2nd class honours upper division. ‘As the leaves of memory fall, I pick and gather them all. The stormy and sunny days keep racing back to me, I still remember all.’ His works are reflections of his thoughts and events happening in his immediate environment and the society at the same time. He tries to promote and celebrate African cultural Heritage through his works, this he depicts by the use of motifs and patterns on Ankara, local beads, Bangles, African hairstyle and hair gears in his subjects. Many of his works are created from his imagination and rendered in realistic forms, “my paintings are visual metaphors, to create awareness on societal problems, for public discuss and social interaction to effect positive change in the society.”
