Jerome’s practice fuses painting, performance and installation to develop simultaneous projects that connect, overlap and disconnect. Investigating themes of chance, narrative and memory, Jerome lifts from contemporary life and politics to construct socially-engaged installations and paintings.
~An ambitious Gesamtkunstwerk, Jerome’s current project Action Black explores how living moments can be captured and expressed through painting. Black paint is initially applied to vinyl flooring during the pre-activation stage, which is the first of three different stages that can connect, overlap, and disconnect at multiple points. These stages can be described as pre-activation, activation, transference and reactivation, and form part of an ecological process that utilises the live dialogue between viewers, participants, artist, and paint in order to activate the work.
~This painted vinyl flooring has been used in fashion shows, dinners, protests, musical experiences, and performances. During each event, viewers are invited to write feelings and messages in oil pastel alongside the artist. The paint is later stripped from the floorboards and used as a medium within Action Black paintings. The conversations present within the works often result in interesting dialogues amongst strangers from considerable different entry points if the floorboards are reused in another event before being used again. Depending on what phase of the cycle the work is in, viewers will get to see the work in one-two or more states. The compositions within Jerome’s paintings speak to conversations present in the works of Clifford Still and Pierre Soulages with the works engaging with the history and material exploration of colour and verticality as metaphor for life.
~Jerome graduated from MA Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2019 and has worked as a Senior Lecturer in Painting since 2021. He has exhibited with Whitechapel Gallery, London; Niru Ratnam, London; Harlesden High Street, London; Reading Museum, Reading and Guts Gallery, London. Jerome has also given numerous artist talks including as part of Hauser and Wirth’s Painters on Painting series.
